'Days of Future Past' Tops The Box Office

by Emma Goddard

Mutants have united and proven their strength at the box office after Fox-Marvel’s X-Men: Days of Future Past earned $91 million this Memorial Day weekend. Although that doesn’t even compare to some past X-Men movies like X-Men: The Last Stand, which earned $102 million its first weekend, X-Men: Days of Future Past can boast its way to the top after beating out the likes of Godzilla this weekend. The remake of the classic monster movie earned $31.4 million its second weekend, but earned $93 million its first weekend.

Estimated to earn approximately $110 million by the end of the four-day weekend, this will make Days of Future Past the fifth highest Memorial Day opener after Fast & Furious 6 in fourth place with $117 million. This will also make it the fourth biggest weekend opener of the year after Captain America: The Winter Soldier at $95 million, Godzilla, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at $91 million.

Even more exciting for the Bryan Singer movie was its debut worldwide where it opened at No. 1 this weekend in 119 countries, earning $262 million. That makes it the highest grossing opening weekend worldwide of all the X-Men movies, according to the Huffington Post. Honestly, this isn’t that surprising considering how badass Jennifer Lawrence looks in head-to-toe blue as Mystique, and the fact that Hugh Jackman stars in the majority of the movie as Wolverine, aka the only man who can pull off claws sticking out of his knuckles.

Plus, what’s better than watching celebrity BFFs, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart on the big screen together? MAYBE Halley Berry and Michael Fassbender because they’re freaking gods, but it’s pretty hard to top Professor X and Magneto.

Though the controversy surrounding Singer allegedly sexually assaulting Michael Egan concerned many who thought the movies sales might plummet, it appears to be going strong so far. After watching the film, it is, in my opinion, one of the better X-Men movies packed full of nail biting action scenes, intriguing stories and relationships between the characters, and great acting.
