Johnny Depp Might Play This Famous Illusionist

by Kristie Rohwedder

Johnny Depp could presto, change-o into quite possibly the most famous illusionist of all time: Harry Houdini. (No disrespect, David Blaine. But Houdini is HOUDINI. I'm sure you understand where I'm coming from.) According to The Hollywood Reporter, Depp is currently in talks with Lionsgate/Summit to star in The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero. Dean Parisot ( Galaxy Quest, Red 2 ) will direct, and Noah Oppenheim penned the screenplay.

The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero is based on William Kalush and Larry Sloman's book of the same name. So, what's the book about? Amazon's got us covered: "Drawing from millions of pages of research, [Kalush and Sloman] describe in vivid detail the passions that drove Houdini to perform ever-more-dangerous feats, his secret life as a spy, and a pernicious plot to subvert his legacy." He did crazy tricks and attempted to solve mysteries. Oo, that secret life!

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will have an Indiana Jones vibe. Innnnteresting. Let's hope said vibe is more Raiders of the Lost Ark and less Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, amirite?! (Yikes. Shots fired!)

(Fine, fine. Credit where credit is due: That alien part at the end of Crystal Skull is pretty hilarious.)
