Charlize Theron Says Googling Herself is like Rape

When you're a major celebrity, there are things about life that must be difficult. The lack of privacy, the constant attention, the inability to step outside in sweatpants and last night's makeup without your photo being plastered on a dozen websites 10 minutes later. It's completely understandable that for many stars, not every aspect of fame is enjoyable, and at times, it must seem like a burden. That being said, being famous is not the worst thing in the world. No matter what some actresses say, fighting with the press is not equivalent to being a veteran of war. And Googling oneself is not the same as the feeling of getting raped, despite what Charlize Theron might think.

While promoting Friday's A Million Ways to Die in the West, the actress revealed how she feels about looking up stories about herself. "I don’t do that, so that’s my saving grace," she said. "When you start living in that world, and doing that, you start I guess feeling raped."

Um, really? Unfortunately, Theron is far from the only celebrity to complain about her fame in a cringe-worthy way — and, horribly enough, a few of them have even said worse. From least to most offensive, here are eight more stars who've whined about the downsides of being famous:

8. Jennifer Lawrence

In the September issue of Vogue, Lawrence said that she is "just not OK" with her level of fame. "It's as simple as that," she said. "I am just a normal girl and a human being, and I haven't been in this long enough to feel like this is my new normal. I'm not going to find peace with it.”

To be fair, Lawrence's celebrity is way more intense than most people's, so we'll give her a pass. Besides, she's not totally off; her comments about seeing paparazzi camping out on her lawn and following her around are pretty disturbing.

7. Brad Pitt

"Fame makes you feel permanently like a girl walking past construction workers," Pitt once said, because clearly, he knows what that's like. Still, like Lawrence, the actor is mega-famous; we don't blame him for being uncomfortable.

6. Britney Spears

During her 2008 MTV documentary, Britney: For the Record : “At first, it’s amazing, the first year or two, because it’s like, I’m a celebrity! ... It didn’t really touch me until I had been working for six years ... I wanted to just stop. I wanted to create a new life."

Sure, it's a little annoying — after the child star years, no one forced her to stay famous — but considering the bevy of issues she faced back then, we're not too peeved.

5. Katherine Heigl

Ah, remember Heiglgate? Back in 2008, the then- Grey's Anatomy star declined consideration for the Emmy Awards, saying that she didn't feel she was "given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination." Coming just a year after her comments about Knocked Up, this quote, while not necessarily unwarranted (seriously, Shonda Rhimes, ghost sex?!), painted Heigl as ungrateful and obnoxious.

4. Justin Bieber

"Fame can tear you apart," Bieber said in 2012. "So you can never really feel like you’re famous. When people start acting like they’re famous, that’s when they start losing it.” Because obviously, Bieber has never, ever acted like he's famous, and all the attention he's gotten over the last couple years was totally not his doing. Yeah, okay.

3. Kim Kardashian

In an interview for an Italian edition of Vogue, Kardashian complained about the "lack of privacy" in her life — despite, you know, ASKING FOR IT.

"Everyone is always watching me," she said. "I’m under constant observation, everywhere I go there’s a camera following me, in the gym, when I do the shopping, and if I decide to go out without make-up it makes news throughout the world."

The life of a reality star who voluntarily records every moment of her life is hard, guys!

2. Kristen Stewart

Charlize Theron's comments about rape are even more surprising when considering the fact that her Snow White and the Huntsman co-star Kristen Stewart got in big trouble for basically saying the same thing back in 2010. In an Elle UK cover story, Stewart said that seeing paparazzi-shot photos of celebrities are like "looking at someone being raped." Once again: nope.

1. Gwyneth Paltrow

And then there's Gwyneth Paltrow. First there were her complaints about how much easier her life would be if she had a 9-5 desk job, and then there was her comment earlier this week about how dealing with Internet haters is equivalent to going through war. As she's proved over and over again, if you want an offensive, out-of-touch, and generally hatable celebrity quote, just follow Paltrow around for a day and see the insanity that comes out of her mouth.
