Shailene's Lost Her Virginity More Than Once

by Anna Klassen

Actress Shailene Woodley is known for her alternative lifestyle. She lives out of a single suitcase, she gave her home to her grandmother, and she makes her own toothpaste and gathers her own mountain water to drink. She even spoke about the benefit of sunning your lady bits. She is, in a word, unpredictable. And while the media is anxious to see what home remedies or words of unconventional wisdom will come out of her mouth next, there's one thing we've overlooked thus far: Shailene Woodley has been typecast. Her lifestyle is whimsical and fluctuating, but her roles are not.

Woodley broke out into the Hollywood landscape by playing powerful and independent women, from knife-wielding Tris in Divergent to the shy but smart Amy in The Spectacular Now, and many roles in between. And the common denominator lies in each character's sexuality. In The Secret Life of the American Teen, Woodley's ABC Family series, her character becomes pregnant after losing her virginity at band camp at the tender age of 15. (Yes, BAND CAMP.) This singular action becomes the catalyst for the show's five season projection, and act as Woodley's first time playing a first time.

In 2013, Woodley played another Amy in The Spectacular Now . This time, Amy is unpopular, nerdy, and generally an honest and compassionate teen. When she meets Sutter, the party-til-he-drops polar opposite of herself, the two form an instant connection which evolves into a sweet and realistic romance. While both Sutter and Amy (to the surprise of Sutter) aren't virgins when they have sex for the first time, it is their first time together. The scene is glorious in its quiet honesty, without music to cut the awkwardness of watching two teenagers embrace one another for the first time.

She'll lose her virginity again on June 6, when the widely-anticipated adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars hits theatres. Not only will her character have sex for the first time, but she'll attempt to make love with a cannula in her nose to a young man with one leg.

And then she'll do it once more, this time with nudity, in White Bird in a Blizzard, where Woodley plays a teenager in the '80s who struggles with her mother's sudden disappearance. She told New York magazine of the role: "It was so much fun. Everyone was freaked out because I’m nude, but in real life, when I have sex, I’m naked. I don’t have a bra on, and I don’t usually have panties on. So let’s make a real movie! Let’s bring truth to the scene!"

Basically, Woodley is a pro at playing a young woman having sex for the first time. And there's a reason why producers and film directors are jumping at the chance to cast her. Like the rest of her perfromances, Woodley depicts her characters love scenes with a sense of truthfulness, realness, and genuine investment.

See her, along with Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff in The Fault in Our Stars this Friday.
