NC Governor To Sign Abortion Restrictions Into Law

by Lane Florsheim

During his campaign last year, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory (R) pledged he would not enact any new abortion legislation as governor. On Friday, he made a very different pledge, promising to sign a series of new abortion restrictions into law.

Hypocrisy, thy name is McCrory.

The new law bars health insurance offered in North Carolina's Obamacare insurance marketplaces from covering abortion. Furthermore, city and county employees will lose health insurance benefits that help pay for abortions. The law also requires abortion clinics to adhere the same facility standards as surgical centers. Right now, 15 of North Carolina's 16 abortion clinics don't meet those standards.

The abortion restrictions were virtuously tacked onto a completely irrelevant motorcycle safety bill by North Carolina Senate Republicans.

OB-GYNs in North Carolina summed it up fittingly, telling state politicians in a statement to "Get out of our exam rooms."
