Church Group Bus Overturns, Killing 3

Three people were killed and over two dozen were injured Saturday when a bus carrying teens from a church summer camp overturned in Indianapolis.

According to an Indianapolis church leader, those killed in the accident include a youth pastor and his wife, as well as a mother of five children. At least 28 others were injured — five critically — but all are expected to recover.

The bus, which was carrying 37 teenagers and adults, reportedly turned over on its side and careened off an exit ramp from Interstate 465 at around 4 pm Saturday. Witnesses say the bus was going at a "high rate of speed," but driver Dennis Maurer says the brakes are to blame for the accident.

"I heard a skid... and I hesitated for a moment and I stopped and I began to look back and I hear the impact. And then I realize something went behind me, and I stopped, and I see this bus in the air and people falling out of this bus and... yeah, it was... I could've gone my whole life without seeing that," a witness told local media following the crash.

"I did hear the bus driver say - I asked him, 'Can I get you something?' And he said, 'My brakes just failed, my brakes just went out,'" the witness added.

Indianapolis Metropolitian police have reopened Keystone Avenue, after having removed the destroyed bus overnight. Investigators are now looking at the possible causes for the crash.

"They'll look at everything bumper to bumper to see if everything was in proper working order. They'll talk to all the he witnesses. It will be a thorough investigation and it will take some time," said an Indianapolis Public Safety official.
