Hillary Doesn't Want to Talk About Monica Lewinsky

by Maitri Suhas

If you think Hillary Clinton is going to be eased into talking about Monica Lewinsky's Vanity Fair piece, think again. In the June 16 issue of People, of which Hillary graces the cover, Clinton gives a long, personable interview about her health, her husband, her potential 2016 run for President (of course)— and deftly dances around the Lewinsky article.

If you'll recall, in May 2014 Lewinsky pretty bravely opened up to Vanity Fair in an effort to change the narrative that has defined her public life since she was a 23-year old intern and was enmeshed in that scandal with former President Bill Clinton. I give props to Lewinsky for breaking her silence, but also, I am a Hillary girl through and through, and I commend Clinton for upholding her rightful silence in the People interview.

When asked by the magazine if she had read Lewinsky's Vanity Fair piece, Clinton said, "No.I dealt with all of that in my book Living History. That was a long time ago. I certainly have moved on." And when further asked if she really did allegedly call Lewinsky a "narcissistic loony toon," the famed insult that came from the journals of Clinton's late friend Diane Blair, Clinton said, "I'm not going to comment on what did or didn't happen. I think everybody needs to look to the future."

Good for Clinton for not responding to the Lewinsky article. While it was respectable of Lewinsky to take the story into her own hands (as Don Draper and Peggy Olson would tell you: if you don't like what they're saying, change the conversation), it doesn't mean that Clinton should be obliged anew to address the incident, especially when she has bigger fish to fry. Like potentially becoming the leader of the free world.

She's free to respond, or in her case, not respond, in whatever manner she pleases. And, in my wildest dreams, she did a little hair-flip at the end of the interview.
