Ah, late July. If you’re in retail, it’s time to clear out the summer racks and make room for cozy knits and leather leggings. So what’s a girl to do about the sales that ensue? Fortunately, making room for new merch often means making serious cuts to sale prices of spring/summer goods. As a shopper, that means it’s time to take advantage of the sales and stock up on transitional wardrobe staples. Look for pieces that will last into the cooler weather with an extra layer, season-less accessories, and au courant menswear-inspired flats.

1. Think about scooping up leather shorts. Perfect to wear now with silk tanks, they’ll be even better with ankle boots and cozy sweaters when the temperature start to fall.

2. Another great find that works just as well with bare legs as with thick tights in the autumn: long sleeved shirt-dresses.

3. Perfect in an I-can’t-believe-I-got-this-on-sale way, there are totes aplenty available at a discount these days. Whether you’re in the market for a new work bag, or something to show off when heading back to campus, a tote will serve you well now, into the fall, and essentially until the straps fall off.

4. In footwear news, sandals aren’t the only shoes on sale this time of year. Great menswear-inspired brogues, loafers, and oxfords will be equally pretty with flimsy dresses or tailored shorts now, and will pair effortlessly with cuffed boyfriend jeans come fall.

All of these staples are conveniently priced to make loading up possible now, and not so trend-laden that they won't resurface from the depths of the closet after this season. Smart moves all around.
