Designers Didn't Want to Dress Melissa McCarthy

by Samantha Matthews

Melissa McCarthy had me at Gilmore Girls and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching her career flourish ever since. She is a beautiful, talented, and incredibly hilarious actress who presented the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 2013 Oscars last February looking glamorous in a dove gray David Meister gown. Unknown to us at the time was the struggle McCarthy went to finding a designer to dress her for the occasion. McCarthy explains in the latest issue of Redbook why she felt the need to start a line of plus-size clothing and what that Oscars experience had to do with it.

Melissa said in the interview with Redbook that, “When I go shopping, most of the time I’m disappointed. Two Oscars ago, I couldn’t find anybody to do a dress for me. I asked five or six designers — very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people— and they all said no.” She's not playing the name game, but it was definitely the designers', not McCarthy's, loss. They missed out the chance at having a lovely actress wear their designs as a presenter, but she didn't lose her serious style cred. I just hope that these fashion designers come to their senses very soon and realize that they would be lucky to design a gown for someone with curves, and that talent has nothing to do with someone's size.
