Fifth Harmony Goes Hard on New Single "BO$$"

Former X Factor contestants Fifth Harmony will release “BO$$,” the rumored lead single from their much-anticipated, as-yet-untitled full-length album, on July 7 (ah, so THAT's where Kesha's dollar sign went). Luckily for fans, the group decided to perform a small snippet of the track at their recent KISS 108 FM concert in Boston, and it sounds like a major departure from the sunny sounds of their debut EP, Better Together. Is that a good thing? Yeah, I think so!

With “BO$$,” Fifth Harmony ditches the power pop of songs like “Miss Movin’ On” in favor of something a little harder. On the brief “BO$$” performance clip, an announcer dramatically introduces the song by saying, “This summer, July 7, the next chapter for Fifth Harmony…” and then a pounding beat reminiscent of rapper Lil’ Mama’s only hit, “Lip Gloss,” kicks in as the girls snap in unison and perform a little sassy choreography. The ladies sing:

Every day is payday, swipe my card, then I do the nae nae

You’re talkin’ to a lady, I wanna Kanye-ye not a Ray J

So that’s a no-no, I’m a Maybach and you’s a Volvo

This convo be like Dre, I already know what you’re tryin’ to say

Boss!

Oooh, sick burn on Ray J! I bet he didn’t even see it coming. “BO$$’s” beat is seriously infectious and the lyrics are seriously quotable. I’m into it.

Don’t get me wrong: there are some fun songs on Fifth Harmony’s Better Together EP, but nothing especially memorable. The group’s unexpected musical turn on “BO$$” might be just what they need in order to finally make their mark on radio. I, for one, am looking forward to hearing the track in full!

“BO$$” was reportedly co-written by rising 16-year-old Swedish pop star Zara Larsson and Jacob Kasher (Kesha’s “We R Who We R”), among others. We’re still over a month away from the song's official release date, but you can pre-order “BO$$” on iTunes starting Thursday at midnight.
