A New Musical From The Makers of 'Frozen'

by Mallory Schlossberg

Can't get enough of Frozen? Don't lie. You can't. You're consuming the memes, the parodies, the GIFs, the merchandise like cans of Pringles. But let's be honest — too many Pringles and you need a break (and some leafy greens, my friends!). Similarly with Frozen, you need some variety in your musical diet! So it should come as good news that the composers of Frozen are creating a new musical. Now you can "let it go" with ease, and sing a new hummable tune instead by Robert Lopez and Kristen Lopez-Anderson.

But if you want to see it on the big screen, you're tough out of luck. You'll probably have to wait for some songs to at least hit YouTube or iTunes. The musical, called From Up Here, will be for the stage, and it will premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse in California in 2015. It's been in development for some time; it was workshopped in 2010, but you can't say time has been lost for the duo. Perhaps it's taken awhile to get it going, since Robert Lopez was super busy with the Tony-winning Book of Mormon and of course, the Oscar-winning Frozen. He's actually got an EGOT!

Back in 2011, he told Playbill :

[...]the thing I've been most excited about for the last five years. I really can't wait for people to see this crazy vision.

He described the romantic comedy as:

[...] kind of like Annie Hall meets Cirque du Soleil. It's a romantic comedy, with a huge theatrical twist

Sounds good! And you know with Lopez writing the music that it will certainly be catchy. Californians will be lucky to get a shot at seeing the show live, but you never know with theater — things could easily transfer to New York. And with the Internet, it's always easy to share a good song.

But as for all of you who only want music from this composing duo if it's animated and sung by Princess Anna or Elsa? Keep building your snowman, and let your Frozen storm rage on.
