And Best Musical Goes To...

by Alanna Bennett

It's Broadway's biggest night, and the biggest award finally has its winner. A Gentleman's Guide To Love And Murder walked away with Best Musical at the 2014 Tony Awards. It beat out After Midnight, Aladdin, and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

Going into Sunday's show, it was unclear who'd take top prize, with theater critic Gordon Cox telling CBS News: "There hasn't been a juggernaut frontrunner. This season I have no idea what's going to happen. It's kind of anyone's game right now." Turns out that game belonged to A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder. The show waged what Deadline called "a great come-from-behind campaign" for the award, making tonight's victory all the sweeter for fans of the show.

Sunday's broadcast also featured a performance by the show's cast, showcasing the number "I've Decided To Marry You." The show itself is based off the book Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal, and follows commoner Monty Navarro in 1909 London as he finds out he's a member of an aristocratic family and ninth in line to the earldom. He then decides to "eliminate" the family's other eight heirs.

In the acceptance speech for the night's big awards, producers declared that "the little engine that could, did!" They also spoke to the power that binds on Broadway, saying that "theater nourishes the soul and gets us to feel and think and see things differently." They also called theater a "great gift," which anyone who watched the Tonys could probably agree that it is.
