Brace Yourselves. Grants Are Coming.

Well if this doesn't make you forgive George R.R. Martin for what he's done to Ygritte, I don't know what will — The Game of Thrones creator has funded a brand-new screenwriting grant at the New Mexico Film Foundation. The George R.R. Martin Screenwriting Grant offers $5,000 per year to exceptional filmmakers who focus on television writing in the Science Fiction or Fantasy genre. Martin, who lives in New Mexico is helping to support the Foundation's mission to, "help grow the independent film industry in New Mexico while offering financial support and educational opportunities to New Mexico independent filmmakers."

The application process, though daunting, is certainly a far cry from facing The Mountain or side-eye from a Lannister. All interested writers must submit a five-page treatment and a five-page sample script. According to the Foundation's President and Executive Director Dirk Norris, “The New Mexico Film Foundation is excited and honored to be working with George in this way...and appreciate his generosity in helping the independent film community in New Mexico.” Seriously. What. A. Mensch.

Submissions will open as early as June 14 and will close in September. For more information, keep (the night's) watch on the New Mexico Film Foundation's website.

The Aerosmith Scholarship, which is available at Berklee College of Music offers funding to outstanding students in the business/management major. How craaaazzzaaaaayyyy awesome of them.

Alec Baldwin

This NYU alum gives back to his alma mater with the Alec Baldwin Drama Scholarship for the Tisch School of the Performing Arts. According to Tisch, the scholarship is awarded to stuents who, " exhibit an unwavering work ethic, leadership skills, a willingness to collaborate, and an ability to tolerate risk and work with constructive criticism. Special consideration will be given to students who are high performing/high need."

Janet Jackson

Her Rhythm Nation Scholarship, in collaboration with the United Negro College Fund ,is open students who demonstrate high academic achievement in their field of choice and have a particular focus on community involvement and improvement.

Derek Jeter

This iconic Yankee might be retiring, but his good work with his Turn 2 Endowed Scholarships aren't going anywhere. Jeter's foundation helps fund students with a special focus on positive behavior, healthy lifestyles, and strong community outreach.

David Letterman

As a Ball State University alum, David Letterman has funded the Letterman Telecommunications Scholarship since 1987. The first-place Telecommunications student receives $10,000, while the first runner-up receives $5,000 and the second runner-up receives $3,333.
