Casey Kasem Has Passed Away

by Lia Beck

After his children received a judge's approval to take him off of life support on Wednesday, Casey Kasem has died at the age of 82 on Sunday morning. Kasem suffered from Lewy Disease, a form of dementia, and his life support was stopped after it was determined that his body was not responding to artificial nutrition. The decision to take Kasem off of life support was made in accordance with Kasem's health directive in which he stated, "If the extension of my life would result in a mere biological existence, devoid of cognitive function, with no reasonable hope for normal functioning, then I do not desire any form of life sustaining procedures, including nutrition and hydration."

While recent news of Kasem has had to do his disappearance in May, the battle for rights between Kasem's wife and his children from a previous marriage, and how this all related to his health, Kasem will, of course, be widely remembered as the voice of pop radio. Kasem is most well-known for hosting American Top 40 from 1970 to 1988 and again from 1998 until 2003. In addition to this, he hosted other radio countdown shows and was an accomplished voice actor as well. Most famously, he voiced Shaggy from Scooby-Doo for over 30 years. First from 1969 to 1997 and later from 2002 until 2009.

Kasem's legacy as a DJ and voice actor will no doubt live on and will be what several generations remember about him. In remembrance of Kasem, check out a few of his moments from radio and TV below.
