What Is That Song in The Google Ad?

by Kristie Rohwedder

Okay, I'm going to be straight with you: That new “journey through high school” Google ad that takes us on a journey through high school? It really does a number on me. Like, I catch myself saying "awww" and/or with a lump in my throat whenever it's on my TV. LIKE A CHUMP. You got me this time, Google. You got me this time. I've also caught myself enjoying the song that’s used in the commercial. So, I did what I had to do: I googled a Google ad. The results: The song is “Promises” by The Boxer Rebellion, and it is the final track on their 2013 album Promises. I promise.

After listening to the song all of the way through, something dawned on me: I've heard this song. I know this song. This song has punched me in the gut before. I must know when and where. I must find the answer.

Fortunately, another quick web search hit me with the answer I was looking for: the ninth episode of the first season of The Originals. (SPOILER: "Promises" is that song that plays when Elijah compels Cami. REMEMBER? Ugh. Devastating.) Aha! Of course. When in doubt, always assume The Originals.

"Promises" sounds great in a commercial or in a TV drama about vampires and werewolves, but it sounds amazing on its own. Gotta break out those headphones and listen to the swirly song swell and build to its grand (and earned) climax. It's a little shoegazey, a little The National, a little Helio Sequence, and a whole lotta terrific:

And here's the Google TV spot:

Awwwwwwww. Every freakin' time.
