Today marks a double whammy for all those superstitious folks out there. Not only is it Friday the 13th, but the Super Moon is tonight as well, and it’s a sight you won’t want to miss — especially since it won’t occur again on this date for another 35 years. Here’s what you need to know about this astronomical event.

1. A Super Moon occurs when the moon's orbit around the earth is at its closest to us. So not only will the moon be full, it will also appear larger than normal.

2. This time of year, the moon will also be lower on the horizon than usual. With trees and land as a reference, this will make the moon look even bigger than a typical Super Moon.

3. According to MLive.com, a full moon on Friday the 13th is extremely rare. It hasn’t happened since October 2000 and won’t happen again until August 2049.

4. The Super Moon will reach its fullest at 12:11 a.m. EST Friday night, but is expected to be around for both Friday and Saturday nights.

5. Meteorologists say tonight’s sky will have patchy clouds, on the east coast at least, but Saturday should have clear skies, making it ideal for all of us to head out that night and howl at the moon (just kidding…don’t do that that. You’ll scare your neighbors.) And make sure to snap some pictures to last you the next several decades! As for those of you who believe creepy things happen during a full moon and/or on Friday the 13th...maybe you should stay in tonight?
