Steve Martin Talks 'Father Of the Bride' Sequel

Early Monday the Internet was taken with one of its regular bouts of mild panic/muted enthusiasm/immediate cynicism: There was a rumor that a Father Of the Bride 3 would happen, this one focusing around a gay couple. Alas! It was not meant to be: Steve Martin's denied Father Of the Bride 3 , crushing our dreams of it being used as a wrung in the latter to crushing heteronormativity.

"So excited to read I'm doing Father of the Bride 3 since I haven't seen a script or been offered the role!" Martin wrote late Monday afternoon. Way to murder dreams, Steven!

In all honesty, though we're always up for a little win in representation, not everyone was super into the idea of another Father Of The Bride movie. Sequels may be doing great this week, but they've still got a stench attached to them, especially so (so, so) long after the original, when it just feels like Hollywood will dredge up literally anything for the opportunity to squeeze another buck out of it. Yes we're looking at you, Mrs. Doubtfire 2 .

That said, we'd love it if a general guideline for these sorts of reboots or continuous sequels was "how do we make this more progressive than it was 20 years ago?" That'd be great.
