The Honest Trailer You Have to See

by Alanna Bennett

It has been almost 20 years since "Run, Forrest, run" entered the popular vernacular. In honor of that anniversary — which technically falls next month — The fine people over at Screen Junkies have made Forrest Gump an honest trailer. It's about what you'd expect from an honest Forrest Gump trailer — by which we mean it's great.

A lot of people grew up with Forrest Gump as a classic in American cinema, so we can be forgiven for glossing over some of its...rough edges in our nostalgia. But if you think about it, there are some sketchy and/or hilarious things in Forrest Gump (depending how you look at it), including but not limited to:

  • Jenny's relationship with Forrest. As the trailer notes, Robin Wright's Jenny's pretty much a "suicidal junky hobo" and their relationship's essentially one between a "damaged woman and the mentally challenged war hero she manipulates." Who doesn't tell someone they have a kid until the kid's five years old and you're seconds away from dying of AIDs???
  • The trailer's right, the last time we saw Forrest Gump we were way too young to understand that premature ejaculation scene.
  • It kinda does serve as the "CliffsNotes to 40 years of white-washed American history."
  • If we're talking narrative agency, Forrest Gump has approximately none. Although he did run across the country of his own volition if we remember correctly — though we doubt he meant to start a cross-country jogging cult.
