Tired of the Songs on the Radio? Listen to This.

by Alex Kritselis

Are you beyond tired of the songs playing on the radio right now? Heard Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” one time too many? (I mean, I love the track, but c’mon, there are limits.) Here’s some great news: Ryn Weaver’s debut single, “OctaHate,” has arrived and it’s a serious breath of fresh air. In fact, the song’s been blowing up social media ever since it premiered last Tuesday. Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams, up-and-comer Charli XCX, and Passion Pit front man Michael Angelakos all sang “OctaHate’s” praises on Twitter last week (of course, the latter two were involved in the song's creation). With some serious star power behind her, Weaver seems like she’s poised to make a big splash on the music scene.

Not much is known about the Los Angeles/New York-based Weaver at this point, but one thing’s for sure: she was able to round up a really impressive group of collaborators to help her with her first single. The curiously titled “OctaHate” was co-written by Weaver and Charli XCX (Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy,” “Boom Clap”), and co-produced by Angelakos, Norwegian DJ Cashmere Cat, and pop super producer Benny Blanco (he’s responsible for crafting some major hits for artists like Katy Perry, Kesha, and Britney Spears).

“OctaHate” is a striking song about the fallout from a breakup, full of vivid imagery and memorable lyrics. On the track’s first verse, Weaver sings:

Lost in the cracks of the landslide

You saw me slipping on my blind side

I’m feeling lost, feeling tongue-tied

And now I’m frozen in your headlights

Deep in the haze of your love high

I used to soar on the live wire

I’m coming down from your supply

And I don’t know if you can make right

The beat pounds as Weaver launches into the emotionally charged chorus:

I can’t take it

From the day I saw my heart start breaking

No one saved me

I can’t take it

Can’t believe I went and lost you, baby

Earth keeps shaking

All around

Oh, you let me down and

I can’t take it

From the day I saw my heart start breaking

No one saved me

“OctaHate” effortlessly blends alternative with radio-ready pop to create a truly unique, truly captivating track that you won’t be able to get out of your head. There’s no word yet on when we can expect to hear more music from Weaver, but hopefully we don’t have to wait too long. “OctaHate” is definitely one of the best debuts of the year so far.
