Can You Do Elaine's Dance?

by Emma Goddard

For many of us, the idea of “starting the dance party” is the thing that nightmares are made of. The best way to describe that fear is the moment Elaine Benes plucks up the courage to dance in Seinfeld’s The Little Kicks episode, and breaks out some horrifying dance moves. Or, as George describes it, “It’s more like a full-body dry heave set to music.” Yet despite how awkward Elaine’s dance is, the Brooklyn Cyclones celebrated the 25th anniversary of Seinfeld with an Elaine Dancing Contest among other tributes.

After all, it’s nice to laugh at yourself every once in awhile. During the game, several women were pulled from the crowd, some of them even looking strikingly similar to Elaine with their wardrobe choice and 90s hair, to show of their best worst dance. Some of the women were so spot on with their “skills” that it made me question whether or not they actually danced like that at home.

The thumbs in the air, the awkward foot kicks, and the uncomfortable throwing back of the head were all present. Watching it for the first time, “Sweet fancy Moses” probably would have been your first though, but all the same, Elaine would have been proud.
