Let’s Show Mindy Some Emmy Love

I’m just going to come right out and say it — I absolutely love Emmy season. The excitement, the anticipation, the TV-themed parties (just me?)… it’s basically my entertainment equivalent to the Super Bowl. So now that the 2014 Emmy Award nominations will finally be upon us this Thursday (think of it as our version of the NFL draft), I wanted to make a personal plea for the nomination (and win) of one very deserving could-be 2014 Emmy nominee: Mindy Kaling.

Seriously, how is it that this woman has played pivotal roles in not one, but two huge pillars in the sitcom community (The Office and The Mindy Project) and still not won an Emmy? This injustice is an oversight of epic proportions and I’m calling bullshit. For starters, Kaling’s work — no matter the project — is always pure comedic gold. This girl could pretty much do funny in her sleep and it shows in absolutely everything she does, which ranges from her multiple hilarious books to extremely relatable musings on Twitter. Oh, and did I mention that she’s not only acted in, but also written, executive produced, and directed episodes for both The Office and The Mindy Project? Talk about a quadruple threat.

And these aren’t just some run-of-the-mill characters that are easy to forget. These are women who aren’t afraid to just tell it like it is…

Just look at Kaling’s Dr. Mindy Lahiri. This OB-GYN may be a little self-absorbed at times (okay, all the time), but somehow we always find ourselves rooting for her to find that rom-com happy ending she so desperately wants. Why? Because Kaling manages to infuse the perfect blend of heart and hilarity into each and every scene, making us want to come back for seconds (and thirds). I mean, she just gets us...

Now, obviously, Kaling isn’t the only extraordinary funny lady dominating the small screen these days. In fact, one could easily argue that the category for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series has never been stronger. So I’m well aware that she’ll most likely be going up against the likes of female comedy powerhouses such as Amy Poehler, Malin Akerman, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, just to name a few. And I’m not saying they don’t deserve their just rewards too — because they totally do. Truth be told, I’d have a hard time deciding who I’d be willing to swap out so Kaling could take their place (but boy-oh-boy, what a great problem to have, right?). I’m simply trying to remind the TV gods just how much Kaling has brought to the humor table over the years and helped to pave the way for many future comedy writers to come.

Bottom line: she’s an inspiration and deserves credit where credit is due. So let’s rectify the situation and show this lady some love, shall we? The snubbing of Mindy Kaling ends here.
