10 'Chamber of Secrets' Book-to-Movie Differences

by Casey Rackham

I don't know about you all, but Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is totally one of my favorite movies in the magical series, and it also happens to be one of my favorite books in J.K. Rowling's series. And, honestly, it's probably because the book-to-movie changes were as minimal as possible. But, I mean, nothing can be as bad as the drastic personality malfunction that movie-Dumbledore incurred in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, amiright? However, that doesn't mean that the changes that did occur in the second movie have gone unnoticed.

When you're a 12-year-old fan going with your mom to see your most prized book being adapted into a film, you can bet your ass that there's going to be some serious know-it-all complaining going on: "Mom, they didn't even show Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday party at Halloween. That was, like, totally going to be one of the best scenes. Idiots." Now that I'm older, I understand that the writers and directors couldn't possibly put every scene (and line) in the film, but that doesn't mean that I'm not prepared to tell everyone who will listen to me about what never made it from page to screen.

But in an effort to not put you to sleep with all of the insanely minute details — Do you really want me to tell you about how in the movie Dobby jumps on Harry's bed instead of sitting there quietly like he does in the book? — here are some of the more "major" changes and/or omissions that occurred in Chamber of Secrets, as discovered by the Harry Potter Wikia.

In the book, Fred and George have to get Harry's trunk out of the cupboard under the stairs, but in the film, the trunk is conveniently right next to Harry.

I remember this part of the book being seriously stressful and exciting, so it definitely would have been fun to watch the twins try to get his trunk out from the cupboard.

We never get to see the Weasley sons "de-gnome" the garden at the burrow.

This would have been so great.

In the film, Hermione fixes Harry's glasses with a spell in Diagon Alley, but in the book, Mr. Weasley repairs the glasses.

Um, Hermione would never break wizarding rules by performing a spell as an underage wizard outside of school grounds. Duh.

In the film, Harry falls out of the flying Ford Anglia and hangs onto the door, but in the book, that never happens.

I guess they wanted more excitement.

As with the rest of the series, Peeves is nowhere to be seen… or heard.

Ugh, but what about all of his glorious sing-song poems?

Once again, there's no Deathday party.

Not over it even a little bit.

In the film, we're not told that Filch is a Squib.

They probably should have added that because it made me want to give him a big bear hug.

In the book, Fred and George try to save Harry from the bludger, not Hermione.

I just want more of Fred and George in everything.

In the book, Professor Binns tells the class about the Chamber of Secrets, but in the film, Professor McGonagall tells the haunting tale.

Um, but I'm really glad she did because it was terrifically spooky.

Professor Lockhart's Valentine's Day breakfast never makes it into the film.

Obviously I'm upset about this party being omitted as well.

Now that you know all of this, are you ready to make everyone hate you at a house party? I hope so.
