He Designed Men's Tights for Barneys

by Erin Mayer

You know what menswear definitely didn't need? Animal printed tights for men. And yet, Russell Westbrook designed animal printed tights for men and included them in his collaboration with Barneys. Now I can't get them out of my mind, which isn't a good thing.

To be fair, I think tights suck in general. They pinch you in weird places and make you feel like you're suffocating if you so much as glance at a second slice of your grandmother's famous applie pie. But as a women who sometimes enjoys wearing skirts and dresses in cooler weather without freezing her calves off, I wear them. When tights are cute, they work.

Russell Westbrook's men's tights are not cute. They are animal printed and designed to be worn under matching basketball shorts. Yes, they are technically "sports tights," but what man is getting his workout gear from Barneys? Unless you are a new cast member in The Lion King on Broadway, you don't need to stuff your man legs into ombre elephant print tights.

Additionally, they are crazy expensive at $165 a pop. If you're a dude who's into tights, save yourself a few bucks and go to Capezio. The rest of the offerings from from Russell Westbrook xo Barneys New York are perfectly acceptible for those who want to, well, dress like Russell Westbrook. But I cannot abide the tights. As Leah Rodriguez from The Cut points out, "Although athletic tights are commonly styled under shorts, as seen on Westbrook in the look book, it's only a matter of time before they break into the wild as a fashion statement on their own." And that's one trend the world doesn't need.
