This Man Has Only Eaten Pizza for 25 Years

by Savannah O'Leary

Meet Maryland's 38-year-old Dan Janssen, who has eaten nothing but pizza for 25 years. Observe his average day, and gawk at the fact that he is still alive, in a new 15-minute documentary by VICE's digital food channel, Munchies.

Indeed, Janssen survives solely on bread, cheese, tomato sauce, and oregano. He detests vegetables, and does not eat meat for “ethical reasons” — so all attempts to incorporate variety into his diet through pizza toppings have failed miserably. In an interview with VICE, Janssen revealed that he is currently enrolled in therapy, which suggests that his limited diet is a product of a psychological condition, rather than a taste bud related deficiency.

Apparently, Dan’s eating habits are not as crippling as you would imagine them to be. Dan does have diabetes, though he seems to write this off. Dan admits to only one inconvenience posed by his "selective diet," which also affects his fiancé (yes, he has a fiancé.)

"I would like to be able to go to a restaurant where they didn't serve pizza and order off the menu, which I can't really do right now. My fiancé is vegetarian, so it would be nice to be able to go out to nicer restaurants with her."

Janssen does not mention the incident where his blood sugar dipped so low that he blacked out in his new car, totaling the vehicle after it served off the road.

Despite this setback, Dan claims he "never want to give up [his] love and passion for pizza."

If there is anything we can take away from this man, it is that we must visit Pontillo’s in upstate New York. Apparently, this is Dan’s absolute favorite. Considering that he has spent a quarter of a lifetime eating pizza, I trust his recommendation. Watch the video below, and check out a full interview with him over at VICE.
