Who Makes More: J. Law or RDJ?

by Alanna Bennett

Just as it was last year, Robert Downey Jr. has been named Hollywood's highest-paid actor. Those Marvel movies, man — they pay well if you're Tony Stark. It was the pay-off from Iron Man 3 that raked in the whopping $75 million that made Downey Jr. top the list. So how does that compare to some of the other A-list names that circulate headlines and box office top-5s on the regular?

There are plenty of categories of "star" in Hollywood these days. In Downey Jr.'s world of movie stardom, that includes peers like Angeline Jolie — Forbes' 2013 highest-paid actress. She, like Downey Jr., has been both a tabloid staple and a ruler of the box office. And she's not the only category of peer: Actors like Dwyane Johnson are frequently putting out major blockbuster action flicks specifically designed to crush the box office. And then there are the young'uns — actors like Jennifer Lawrence who've staked their claim on the box office early and often.

Context is everything, so let's take a look at what some other people in Hollywood are making compared to Downey's overwhelming haul.

He was second on Forbes' list of highest-paid actors, with a $52 million haul. These all come from action flicks in the Hercules and Fast and Furious veign.

The highest-paid actress according to Forbes' 2013 list. With Maleficent making its mark as the top-earning movie of Jolie's career, she'll likely make this year's list too. She made $15 million on Maleficent and $33 million total last year. Compare that to the $50 million Downey Jr. made on Iron Man 3 alone and you've got an, uh, interesting picture.

Lawrence is the second-highest-paid lady in Hollywood — she made about $26 million last year. That's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, American Hustle, and X-Men: Days Of Future Past at work. For the record: Catching Fire out-earned Iron Man 3 , and the Women's Media Center's annual report said that Lawrence makes $11 million less than Adam Sandler, Hollywood's most over-paid actor. Lawrence, too, topped Forbes' list of most-powerful actresses.
