10 Reason Why Being Brunette Is Really Awesome

by Shorey Andrews

Not to offend the beauties out there with gorgeous golden locks or intense red tresses, but I think being a brunette is pretty damn awesome. In fact, I may even go so far as to say that being a brunette is actually the best. Not only are we accused of being the smartest hair color of them all, but we are also talked about as the most trustworthy of all shades. Now, if you rolled your eyes at those last statements, I'm totally with you. These completely unscientific claims aren't the true reasons that being brunette is completely awesome. Word to the wise, if you are going to say your hair color is the shade to end all shades, you'd better muster up some valuable points.

Since the beginning of time, brunettes have sat in the background while blondes had more fun. We rarely get to be called a bombshell, and our Barbie counterpart Teresa just isn't as cool. But, despite getting shafted the majority of the time, we brunettes have carried on through. We have watched some of our favorite blonde celebs spend time on the dark side (J.Law and SJP, I'm looking at you!), and have incorporated vixen into our vocabulary by way of sexy brown-haired celebrities like Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie.

While I'm still waiting for that definitive proof that brown hair is the best hair, it is still fun to think about all the reasons it is so great to be a dark-haired maven. Brunettes, unite!

1. BEING MISTAKEN FOR A LIBRARIAN

Brunettes, especially those of us who wear glasses, are constantly teased for resembling a librarian. It may not sound like fun, but there are many ways a woman can use this to her advantage. It makes us feel studious and wise ... and can feel a little naughty too, if you're into that sort of thing. It truly provides the best of both worlds.

2. IT'S CHEAPER!

Yup, believe it or not, it is much cheaper to have brown hair versus any other hair color available. Our roots are easier to get away with, we are able to find color matches much faster, and we can dye our hair less frequently. If winning was still a relevant hash tag, I would be tempted to use it here.

3. WE OWN THE FALL/WINTER SEASON

Another added bonus for us brunettes is the fact that pretty much all fall colors look fabulous on us. Jewel tones, rich tones, and deep shades of everything complement our hue with a beautifully wrapped bow. Hey, our hair can't look "sunkissed" in the summer, so you gotta give us this one, blondes!

4. WE'RE IN GOOD COMPANY

We know Marilyn Monroe and Bridget Bardot are world renowned sex symbols, and Jessica Simpson and Lady Gaga are international pop stars, but you know what else they are? Brunettes. Brunettes with incredible colorists, but still.

5. MEN PREFER TO MARRY BRUNETTES

I know it sounds ridiculous, but in a study that took place last year 1,000 men were surveyed to find out which hair color preferences they had for a wife, and 54 percent decided to go with, you guessed it, brown. I've also read conflicting versions of this survey so really, it's all a bunch of BS. I bet it caught your attention though!

6. WE SHINE IN THE SUMMER

So, we may not have epic highlights to show off in the summer heat, but luckily having a full head of brown hair means mega shine. The best part is that we barely have to make an effort. The sun drinks up our dark strands like water and projects a glimmer off each piece that's hard to match.

7. OUR GIRL NEXT DOOR PERSONA

Thanks to Dawson's Creek, every girl with the dark hair sweeping over her face will forever be known as the girl next door. Joey Potter embodied everything we love about a sassy brunette and broke ground when she kicked Jen Lindley right out of the spotlight for almost an entire series. We loved Joey and we related to her on some personal level that felt just as real as that time Pacey told her he loved her.

8. PEOPLE THINK WE ARE MYSTERIOUS

Call it an urban myth, but for some reason brunettes tend to get dubbed as mysterious. Maybe it's because we spend more time thinking than we do speaking, but for the most part I think it comes from that whole dark and dangerous sentiment.

9. LIPSTICK IS OUR MAKEUP SPIRIT ANIMAL

I have to say, being a brunette makes applying makeup a breeze. We can get away with so much more than a blonde or redhead, plus those super deep lip colors were made to match our dark mane. Point goes to Taylor Swift however, for proving to every blonde around the world that red lipstick is your match made in heaven.

10. BROW POWER

If you were born with dark hair, chances are you were also blessed with some killer brows. If Cara Delevingne has taught us anything, it's that eyebrows can ultimately rule the world.
