Get Ready For An Iron Man/Hulk Rivalry

by Alanna Bennett

When the first Avengers movie came out, it left a lot of people with a deep appreciation for the relationship between Tony "Iron Man" Stark and Bruce "The Hulk" Banner. One poked the other to unleash his inner rage monster, they bonded over science, the rest was history. Only it turns out not all will be well between the Science Bros in Avengers: Age Of Ultron . In fact, they're gonna have a pretty hairy fight.

The last we checked in with the Science Bros onscreen was at the end of Iron Man 3, when we found Tony Stark relaying his many emotional problems to bestie Bruce Banner. And the last someone asked Mark Ruffalo about it, he said that there'd be lots more to take in between them.

It’s, oddly enough, a much bigger movie than Avengers One was. It’s a little bit darker. It’s – we get a lot deeper into the character now, since we established them in the first one, so we get to cover a lot more ground.Ultron’s incredible. There’s more stuff with Banner and Tony Stark, more “Science Bros” stuff. And it’s pretty sweeping, it’s pretty epic.

I kind of assumed, then, that Ruffalo meant there'd be more bonding friendly funtime. Considering the footage that came out at Comic-Con, though — which apparently featured a giant, physical fight between Hulk and Iron Man — I'm gonna go out on a limb and say I misinterpreted. "Stuff" does not mean friendly stuff, and "sweeping" and "epic" could also mean plenty of things. Here's what Robert Downy Jr. said at Comic-Con, as reported by HitFix:

It can't just be a good fight, it's gotta be about something. And the great thing in Age of Ultron is, that fight between [Hulk and Tony Stark] is, nobody wins when two people who are friends fight.

This is much more depressing Science Bros time than I was anticipating.
