Sonja's Officially Lost It

by Caitlyn Callegari

So here it is: the Real Housewives of New York reunion. Though, I'm never exactly sure why one would have to have a "reunion" with a group of women who are supposedly close friends that all live within a 20-mile radius from one another. Too many solo Hamptons trips and not enough time together at Le Cirque, perhaps? Anyhow, this reunion was doomed from the get-go considering the cast of Real Housewives of New York has had rather strange chemistry the entire season. It's been a constant battle between those between the logical and illogical, and scarily enough, the reunion only solidifies that those who refuse to deal in reality have finally lost it.

Case in point: Sonja Morgan. While The Countess LuAnn has certainly kept her cool this season, it's clear that she's still harboring a lot of resentment towards her once upon a time bestie, based on her relentless quips. As is everyone else on team logical, which is comprised of the aforementioned LuAnn, Carole, Heather, and Kristen (and me, from my couch). I suppose there is only so much talk of imaginary business management that one can take before going totally ape shit. Because if Sonja wasn't so lighthearted and silly, I'd like to Moonstruck some sense into her.

Sonja's much-talked-about "delusion" can be summed up in what was arguably the best line of the night: "Sonja, you don't have a yacht!" Which out of context is basically just as funny as it is in context. But really, unless it's the year 2003, if you want to look cool, don't mention hanging out with P. Diddy.

I'm not sure what was more disturbing, though: The fact that LuAnn was genuinely upset over the loss of friendship and Sonja didn't care, or Sonja's general inability to feel anything, based on the fact that she smiled throughout every insult and jab directed her way. I wanted her to show some emotion — it's the RHONY reunion, for Andy's sake!

The most fitting description I've ever heard of Sonja was one comparing her to the Edies of Grey Gardens. The withering affluence, the Hamptons home, the insatiable need for attention, the alienation from friends and family, and the out and out denial of reality — it's almost too close for comfort. If there's one thing I felt watching this episode, it was discomfort. It's not a pretty thing to see someone's psyche unravel on TV. I hope that she gets the help she needs or at least acknowledges that there's a problem.
