'TMNT' Beat 'Guardians' This Week, But Why?

by Alanna Bennett

Well, buckle up, world: Another big screen Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is happening, and it's all your fault. TMNT's opening weekend won the box office's top spot, beating Guardians Of the Galaxy into second place. Ugh, but why?

We've established before that it's not necessarily quality that leads the factors in getting a box office victory — far from it. But come on you guys, the kindest thing Rotten Tomatoes says about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is that it's "neither entertaining enough to recommend nor remarkably awful." It has a 19 percent on that site; Guardians Of the Galaxy has 92 percent. Guardians is also only a week or so older than TMNT — so why did TMNT beat it so easily? Did the shiny newness really fade so quickly?

The children might be to blame. TMNT's $65 million opening weekend could at least partially be contributed to the fact that it's being billed as "family friendly." Guardians isn't exactly rated R, but TMNT's rated PG vs. Guardians' PG 13, so...maybe we can blame it on that?

It's hardly like Guardians is flopping at this point, though: It brought in $41.5 its second weekend, which ain't half bad.
