Watch Kevin Impersonate Frank Impersonate Bill

by Nuzha Nuseibeh

In case you weren't aware, it is former president Bill Clinton's birthday next week. (On Aug. 19, if you were wondering.) So what do you do if you're this former president's wife, to honor the momentous occasion of your husband turning 68? Why, make a House of Cards parody with Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood impersonating Bill Clinton, of course, to get viewers to sign their name on a birthday card. Duh.

In the surreal video, Spacey sits at his White House desk looking directly at the camera as House of Cards-style music plays in the background. In his distinctive Underwood twang, Spacey tells the camera: “Washington D.C. is so boring during the summer that I like to entertain myself by having some fun with my predecessor.” Looking suitably mischievous, Spacey/Underwood then makes a phone call. This phone call, it turns out, is to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Changing his voice ever-so-slightly, Spacey then says: “Hi, Hill it’s Bill. I just want to make sure you don’t forget my birthday is coming up.” So now we have Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood impersonating Bill Clinton, apparently prank calling Hillary. It's confusing and weird and wonderful all at the same time. He then asks "Hill" what she's getting for "his" birthday. "Elephants?" he suggests hopefully, adding another level of bizarre to the dialogue.

Hillary Clinton refuses to reveal what she's getting, instead making a tongue-in-cheek reference to her elusive are-you-running-for-president answers. She says: “I told you. This is a very personal decision that I will make when I’m ready.” They then start talking about Chelsea Clinton's future baby, at which point Spacey/Underwood/Clinton subtly suggests calling their grandchild Frank or Claire.

“I was actually thinking of pushing for the name Kevin if it’s a boy …" Clinton says, revealing that she has known all along that it's neither Bill Clinton nor Frank Underwood on the phone but actually the famous actor! "Kevin, will you please just sign my husband’s birthday card already?” she asks.

The video then asks viewers at home to sign their names on Bill Clinton's birthday card, and also links to The Clinton Foundation, in case anyone feels like giving a donation to the multi-million dollar organization.

Just before closing, the video cuts to a House of Cards-type text message exchange between "Underwood" and "Bill" (the "real" Bill), where the former president asks what his "successor" found out from his phone conversation with Hillary. "She'll make a decision when she's ready," Underwood's text reads.

Hmm, anyone else getting the sense that the video isn't really about Bill's birthday, after all?
