She's More Than Just Mrs. McConaughey

Alright, alright, alright. We've known about Matthew McConaughey ever since he appeared in Dazed and Confused, but what about his wife Camila Alves? Let's find out more about her backstory, because to be honest, I don't know much about her. This is perfect timing, since after all, she'll likely be joining her husband at Monday's Emmy Awards. He’s nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his work on True Detective and the pair always shows up to the red carpet in style. But more than just his arm candy, McConaughey's wife Camila Alves is worthy of recognition on her own.

Here's a bit about her background: Alves is originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 32-year-old moved to the U.S. at age 15 and first lived in Los Angeles with her aunt. Many years later in 2006, she met McConaughey at a bar on Sunset Boulevard. According to him, it was love at first sight. Six years later, they got married, and since then, they've had three children together: Livingston, Levi, and Vida. Ordinary names aren't their thing, I guess. But the children are adorable nevertheless.

Besides her famous family, she's a hard-working woman. So let's learn more about McConaughey's leading lady:

She's Got Guts

At age 19, she moved to New York City to pursue a modeling career. That sounds like a bold step, especially for a teenager, but it's admirable that she wasn't afraid to go after what she wanted.

She's A Model

That perseverance paid off! Not only has she appeared in ad campaigns for brands such as Christian Dior cosmetics and Harley-Davidson, she's also been in music videos. She appeared in the "Pushing You Back" video by Chingy (Remember him? He's only one call away) and Neyo's "Because of You."

She's An Actress

Just like her husband, she's got some acting skills of her own. She's appeared in various movies, including 2010's The Confidant. She also had a brief, uncredited appearance in the 2002 movie Snow Dogs.

She Makes Handbags

Working with her mom, who has a background in fashion design, she created line of handbags called MUXO. According to the site, they're inspired by her time spent in NYC and Brazil. Again, this shows she's extremely driven and hardworking.

She Can Host

For Bravo, Alves hosted Season 3 of their hairstyling show Shear Genius.

She Bakes Cakes

Um, how amazing is that snake cake? According to Alves' Twitter, this isn't something she does on the regular. But she totally should!

She's Just Like Us

This Instagram photo shows that she, too, is not immune to the great pull of Target. Just like us, she can't help leaving the store with a full cart.

So there you have it! When you see her on Emmy night, just remember — in addition to being a super supportive wife, she's successful in her own right.
