Bisexual Amber Heard's off-color gay comment

by Maitri Suhas

In an interview with Elle magazine coming out on Aug. 20, Amber Heard, the 27-year-old actress says she was never ashamed of coming out. Heard is the star of the upcoming film Paranoia, in which she plays the love interest of Liam Helmsworth. Though she's now dating Johnny Depp, Heard came out in 2010 at a GLAAD event. In the interview with Elle, she says, "I don't imagine myself, my work, or my life, fitting into any kind of standardized path," she continued. "In fact, the idea of there even being a standard freaks me out a lot."

Okay... that's fine if you want to be a special gem and a unique butterfly. But Heard implying that being bisexual is "not standard" is what irks me here. She's insinuating that somehow being bisexual is outside of the normative, when in fact that just is more othering. It may be okay for Heard, who is conventionally beautiful and dating Johnny Depp, for christ's sake, to be so candid about her sexuality. But would a celebrity who wasn't as standardly beautiful be getting so much attention for coming out? If there's one standard Heard meets, it's Hollywood's beauty standards. Obviously, there is no one standard sexuality, and I hate that what Heard is saying makes it seem like her bisexuality is a special quirk of hers.
