People Are Already Lining Up For The iPhone 6

by Alicia Lu

Six is the magic number — for Apple fans, that is. The tech company will unveil its new iPhone 6 at a launch event next Tuesday, but New York City Apple fans started lining up outside the flagship store on Fifth Avenue this Wednesday. Yup, that's six days of camping outside, sitting on lawn chairs, peeing at the nearby Starbucks, and passionately speculating about screen sizes with fellow enthusiasts. It's a familiar scene, since Apple fans have long been known to turn the act of purchasing a cell phone into a mini Burning Man.

When a few of the campers were interviewed by CNBC, one man named Joseph Cruz revealed that he had actually been there waiting for the yet-to-be-announced iPhone 6 since Sunday. Given that the iPhone normally launches about 10 days after its unveiling, his total wait time could tally up to 20 days .

Last month, Apple sent out mysterious invitations to media outlets that simply read "9.9.2014. Wish we could say more." The press event is widely believed to be for the purpose of unveiling Apple's new iPhone 6, and initiated the usual rumor mill focused on specs, features, and a release date. In recent days, the rumors have reached fever pitch.

The iPhone 6 is expected to have iOS 8, a 10-megapixel primary camera, and two sizes, 5.5 inches and 4.7 inches. Some insiders are predicting that the Gorilla Glass screen of the iPhone 5 will be replaced by a nearly indestructible sapphire screen while others deny the claim and suggest instead that the iPhone 6 will have 128 gigabytes of storage.

The iPhone 6 is also expected to debut alongside a wearable device insiders are calling the iWatch. The exciting new gadget is rumored to be a simplified version of your smartphone for your wrist, complete with messaging, apps, and Siri.

Now that you got a sense of what all the fuss is about, the notion of camping out nearly a week in advance may seem a little less crazy, but let's be honest — only marginally. Spending a week on a lawn chair playing with your old iPhone while waiting for a new one is pretty nuts, but I applaud their commitment.
