A Nail Art Reality Competition Will Debut Soon

by Erin Mayer

Nail art is dead, right? Wrong! Nail'd It , a reality nail art competition, is coming to your television on October 7th at 9 p.m. EST. So, um, set your DVRs, I guess?

According to Cosmopolitan, Nail'd It will air on Oxygen and will be hosted by Adrienne Bailon of 3LW fame. Is it 1999 again or something? The show follows 18 nail artists (three each week) as they compete for the chance to win $100,000. Cosmo reports that judges include nail experts such as "Jan Arnold, CND's co-founder and style director; top celeb manicurists Tom Bachik and Terrance Terry, aka the "Nail Villian"; and distinguished judge of nail art competitions worldwide, Elaine T. Watson, Cuccio International's VP of marketing and sales and global education director."

My question is this — why is now the right time for a nail art competition? The Oxygen website's description of the show calls nail art "the newest fashion trend of nail design," but that's simply not true. Nail art isn't a new trend. In fact, many trend reporters are speculating that nail art may actually be kind of over. Are the producers at Oxygen that unaware that 2014 is not they heyday of crazy 3D nail designs?

I won't pretend that Nail'd It is about to be my new favorite television show, but I'm sure some people will want to tune in and check out the wacky (and totally unwearable) designs created by the competition hopefuls. Based on the trailer, contestants will be asked to create nail concepts for everything from "a bouquet for a fantasy wedding" to "a hip-hop design to be featured in Diamond's music video." Doesn't sound like we'll be seeing a lot of French tips or negative space manicures.
