'Mistresses': Will It Be My Dirty Little Secret?

On Monday night, ABC will premiere Mistresses, a show that could very well be my next guilty pleasure. We all have those shows — the ones you never talk about with your friends, that you watch in frenzied marathons when your boyfriend goes out (or is that just me?), and Mistresses, from the look of its trailers and reviews, seems to fit the bill perfectly. Sure, the show — a drama chronicling the steamy affairs of four female friends that was adapted from a British hit (we know how well that goes!) — won’t win any awards, but not every show about women can be Sex and the City, nor would we want them to be. Sometimes, at the end of a long day, all you want is to plop down in front of the television and watch something aesthetically pleasing, with sexy men and easy-to-understand plotlines. I’m obsessed with Game of Thrones, but there are days when I can barely comprehend commercials, let alone plots where everything is as intricately woven together as Beyoncé’s hairstyles.

The blogosphere already seems disdainful of Mistresses — which stars Alyssa Milano and Lost's Yunjin Kim — calling it “trashy” and “brain dormant,” but I think that the world is a tough and unpalatable place and a little brain junk food is a welcome distraction from time to time. I mean really, SATC was well-written but we can all admit we weren’t watching it for the biting social commentary. Mistresses doesn’t look like Emmy fodder, but it doesn’t misrepresent itself either, so what more can we ask for?
