'Homeland's Mandy Patinkin Admits to Being an Asshole, But He's Not the Only One

Homeland's Saul, an asshole? Hard to believe, but the actor who plays the beloved Showtime character, Mandy Patinkin, admitted his past regrettable behavior in an interview with The New York Times. Patinkin, who earned a reputation after abruptly leaving both Chicago Hope and Criminal Minds, said he wouldn't even let directors talk to him on the set of the former series. "I was so spoiled," he said. "I started off with people like Milos Forman, Sidney Lumet, James Lapine, unbelievably gifted people. So there I was saying, ‘Don’t talk to me, I don’t want your opinion.’ I behaved abominably. I don’t care if my work was good or if I got an award for it. I’m not proud of how I was then, and it pained me.”

But Patinkin is certainly not the only celebrity in Hollywood who has admitted to being an asshole. Here are other stars who checked themselves before wrecking themselves.

Saul, a Douchebag?!

Homeland's Saul, an asshole? Hard to believe, but the actor who plays the beloved Showtime character, Mandy Patinkin, admitted his past regrettable behavior in an interview with The New York Times. But Patinkin is certainly not the only celebrity in Hollywood who has admitted to being an asshole. Here are other stars who checked themselves before wrecking themselves.

John Mayer

If John Mayer's body is a wonderland, his mouth is a landfill. After breaking out with Room for Squares, the singer-songwriter found himself going from charming crooner to maligned douche after speaking out about his relationships with famous exes, including Jessica Simpson, who he called "sexual napalm" in an interview with Playboy. But, with bad press catching up with him, Mayer appeared on CBS Sunday Morning, and admitted, "I was just a jerk." Let's just hope that stays in the past tense.

Reese Witherspoon

America's sweetheart proved to be anything but when, in 2013, Witherspoon's husband Jim Toth was arrested for driving under the influence, leading the actress to confront cops with the dreaded, "Do you know my name?" After the media firestorm, Witherspoon released a statement acknowledging her assholery: "I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said ... The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am." Sweetheart restored.

Ozzy Osbourne

When divorce rumors surrounding the Osbournes began running rampant, the Black Sabbath rocker took to his Facebook page to squash chatter... and apologize for falling off the wagon: "I was in a very dark place and was an asshole to the people I love most, my family. However, I am happy to say that I am now 44 days sober ... I would like to apologize to Sharon, my family, my friends and my band mates for my insane behavior during this period."

Elisabeth Hasselbeck

In 2010, The View host made many turn red following her words about sexual objectification victim Erin Andrews' red-hot attire on Dancing With the Stars: "In light of what happened and as a legal [matter] — and as inexcusable as it was for that horrific guy to go in and try to peep on her in her hotel room. I mean, in some way if I'm him, I'm like, 'Man! I just could've waited 12 weeks and seen this — a little bit less — without the prison time!'"

After realizing fans were angry to hear Hasselbeck's words, after Andrews' privacy was invaded via a peephole and camera in a hotel room, the host said the next day on The View , "[My daughters] said to me, 'Mommy, why don't you just call Erin and tell her you're sorry?' ... So, thankfully, I listened to her -- she's a wise little girl — and I did. So, I'm really sorry, and I wanted to offer that publicly too, even though I did follow that advice." Seems Hasselbeck should hire her daughter as her manager.

David Letterman

In 2009, the late night host shocked viewers when he admitted on air he was being blackmailed for having sexual relationships with staff members. Though some assumed he was joking at first, it became clear the situation was anything but funny when he thanked staff "putting up with something stupid I did," and even acknowledged his sure-to-be massive unpopularity following the revelation. “I got into my car this morning and even the navigation lady wasn’t speaking to me.” Okay, so kind of funny.

John Lennon

He might have told us all we needed was love, but based on a 1980 interview with Playboy , all Lennon really needed was anger management. The Beatles singer admitted that he was anything but kind to the women in his life: "I used to be cruel to my woman, and physically — any woman. I was a hitter. I couldn't express myself and I hit. I fought men and I hit women. That is why I am always on about peace, you see." Now we want to spend significantly less time in Strawberry Fields.

Alec Baldwin

The 30 Rock actor has had run-ins with many, but no one expected him to have a run-in with his own 11-year-old daughter, Ireland. After leaving a leaked voicemail for his daughter, calling her a rude, thoughtless little pig," Baldwin appeared on The View to acknowledge the not-so-nice remark: "Obviously calling your child a pig or anything else is improper and inappropriate and I apologize to my daughter for that ... There's nothing wrong with being frustrated or angry about the situation ... It's the way you do it, and as people often do in this world, I took it out on the wrong person." Now, he only takes it out on paparazzi.

Christian Bale

In 2009, press leaked Bale's four-minute profanity-laced rant against a crew member during the filming of Terminator: Salvation. The taping that made the dark knight seem way too dark for our tastes, and forced the actor to publicly admit he was awful: "Listen, I know I have a potty mouth; everybody knows this now ... The thing that I really want to stress is I have no confusion whatsoever. I was out of order beyond belief. I was way out of order. I acted like a punk. I regret that." Well, Bale, at least the Internet doesn't.

Kanye West

Forget one singular comment — everyone's favorite asshole West called himself just that in an entire song, "Runaway." "You been puttin' up wit' my shit just way too long," start the lyrics, "Let's have a toast for the douchebags / Let's have a toast for the assholes." Cheers?
