What's With "Booty"s Product Placement?

by Christine DiStasio

So, like, is Eos the only lip balm celebrities use anymore? Or is it just that it's the only photogenic enough lip balm to be featured in a music video? Or is its round shape reminiscent enough of a "booty" that it had a natural place in Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea's new music video for "Booty?" It has to be the latter, right? If not, there's absolutely no other justification for the shameless and, frankly, uncomfortable plug in the bodysuit-clad, booty-shaking music video.

J. Lo and Iggy's latest ode to larger-than-life backsides isn't the first music video that's featured shameless product placement and it's certainly not the worst when you look at it next to Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" video. That video featured almost as many products as shots of Minaj's derrière — OK, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration. But, like, why would you bring your Beatz Pill to the jungle, of all places?

It might be just me waxing nostalgic on a Friday afternoon, but does anyone remember when music videos were supposed to be art? My god, even "Oops... I Did It Again" had a plot. (And, no, the old lady throwing it into the ocean at the end does not count as Titanic product placement.) Somewhere along the line, though, music videos have become really long, uncomfortable commercials for things that clearly don't fit in with video's concept. Here are 5 examples of totally eye roll-worthy product plugs in music videos that'll probably make you lose faith in humanity. Sorry.

"Booty" — Jennifer Lopez feat. Iggy Azalea

Unless you're rubbing that Eos lip balm on your butt cheeks, J Lo, WHY THE HECK IS IT IN THIS VIDEO?

"Anaconda" — Nicki Minaj

Can someone just tell me why? Out of all of the plugs in this video, this plug for the Beatz Pill is the weirdest... and the worst.

"We Can't Stop" — Miley Cyrus

Another Eos plug that's all like, "WTF?" Miley sings, "If you're not ready to go home, can I get a 'hell no,'" and all we see is Eos. Honestly, if you have that many lip balms, I definitely want to go home right now, Miley. Because you're totally insane. And that's coming from someone who has five of the same lip balm.

"Work Bitch" — Britney Spears

Clearly, a true definition of "work, bitch." It was hard to choose the worst plug from this video, but this one takes the cake. This girl probably had lockjaw by the time this shoot was over.

"Telephone" — Lady Gaga feat. Beyoncé

I guess prison workers need love too? Out of all of the plugs in the "Telephone" video this one might actually be the weirdest of all time.
