The 'HIMYM' Pineapple Mystery Is Solved!

by Sofia Barrett-Ibarria

After the finale episode of How I Met Your Mother, the Internet basically exploded with anger and disbelief. Sure, we found out who the "mother" was, only to learn shortly after catching a brief glimpse of her and getting attached that she's been dead the whole time. But aside from that, so many of the show's mysteries were left unsolved, and so many questions left unanswered. Specifically, who the hell is responsible for the "Pineapple Incident"? Luckily, there is hope. In an exclusive deleted scene, it looks like the long-running HIMYM secret of the mysterious pineapple has finally been solved.

Back in Season 1, Ted (Josh Radnor) got really drunk and took Trudy (Danica McKellar) back to his apartment to do the sex, and when the two woke up the next morning, there was a pineapple sitting on Ted's nightstand. The "Pineapple Incident" was one of the longest running (and there were many) inside jokes on HIMYM, but the origin of the pineapple hasn't been revealed until now.

SPOILER ALERT!

The answer to the mystery centers on the captain and his "old sea captain's tradition to put a pineapple on your porch as a symbol of hospitality." After waiting around for nine seasons to find out what the deal with the pineapple was, the answer is a little anticlimactic, and almost too simple, but at least we know, and it doesn't involve anyone being dead this whole time.

You can watch the full deleted scene here, or on the special features of the HIMYM full series DVD set when it's released Sept. 23.
