'American Idol' Locks In Third Judge?

by Kate Ward

Keith Urban has been confirmed for weeks. Jennifer Lopez is returning. But now comes news about American Idol's third judge, a panelist who, unlike Urban and Lopez, has yet to serve on the reality show panel.

According to sources, Dr. Luke has been locked in as Idol 's Season 13 judge alongside Urban and Lopez, who served during Season 12 and Seasons 10 and 11, respectively. The producer — who is behind hits like Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" and Idol's own "Since U Been Gone" — would bring new blood to the reality competition series, which was starting to look like previous iterations. Not only have Urban and Lopez served on the panel before, but this week brought reports that Randy Jackson is returning to the series to replace Jimmy Iovine as a mentor. (In May, Jackson finished his stint as Idol judge for a whopping 12 seasons.)

Following Season 12, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe was replaced by Swedish Idol producer Per Blankens, who no doubt wants A-list talent to return to the series. It remains to be seen whether or not Dr. Luke (né Lukasz Gottwald) is an unknown entity headed for fame, much like another producer-turned-Idol judge with a fondness for black t-shirts.
