Apple Fanboys Should Not Watch These Videos

by Emma Cueto

All week, Apple aficionados have been lining up outside Apple stores across the country to get their hands on what will presumably become a prized possession: the iPhone 6, which was released last week. And while some people have been cherishing their new devices and others have been discovering things like not to put them in the microwave or in your skinny jeans, YouTuber Rated RR has instead spent six days putting the new iPhone through six torture tests. Sorry, all you Apple fanboys, but that's how the cookie crumbles — or rather, how the iPhone shatters.

Of course, videos of users torturing their electronic devices is nothing new, and is especially popular with Apple products. Something about those sleek cases and the aura of invincibility they project just calls to would-be destroyers. And so the drop tests and water tests and can-I-run-my-car-over-it tests continue unabated across the Internet. But Rated RR takes these things to the next level in his Tech Assassin series by using destruction equipment that's way beyond sidewalks or automobiles. We're talking military-style stuff like thermite and 50-caliber rifles.

So if you're a fan of watching stuff get destroyed or you just hate Apple and love watching their products be demolished, these torture tests are definitely for you.

The six days of torture testing kicked off with some liquid nitrogen.

For a brief moment there, it looked like the phone might actually survive the liquid nitrogen bath. But no. Still, it held up better than most other products tested this way, given that most of its internal components are still intact. They're just... no longer internal.

Day two, on the other hand, proved to be more a test of the blender's capabilities than the iPhone. But the iPhone still died.

It held up well, though, I guess.

Day three of the torture testing was actually pretty standard, with water and drop tests. But it's still worth a look for the crazy cool slow motion.

And of course, for those of you who are really only in this for the dead Apple products, it's also worth it because you get to see an iPhone die. Or mostly die. It still turns on, I guess.

Now, since the iPhone 6 Plus couldn't even best a sidewalk, it's unlikely that it would be able to stand up to a 50 caliber rifle. So I don't think it's a spoiler to state that this thing blows apart like nobody's business.

There are hardly any pieces big enough to be collected even. So much for indestructible.

But the most exciting test so far is the one with the thermite. Yes, thermite, that stuff that you normally hear about in the context of welding, military hand-grenades, and 9/11 conspiracy theories.

I guess I'll believe him that the screen did a relatively good job of protecting the rest of the phone, but that thing is dead. The burned-beyond-recognition-and-still-bubbling kind of dead.

So what will be the final video in this ongoing series of iPhone torture? No idea, but I can't wait.
