10 Things To Put in Your 2014 Time Capsule

Over the past week, the city of Boston has been buzzing about the recent discovery of a 113-year-old time capsule lodged inside the golden lion statue on top of the Old State House. The State House is located in Downtown Boston, and serves as an iconic stop along the Freedom Trail. According to Heather Leet, director of development for the Bostonian Society, the group has known about the capsule for years thanks to a letter they received from a descendent of one of the statue's sculptors. Although members of The Bostonian Society are still struggling to open the capsule, officials say they're getting closer and closer to uncovering its contents, which are rumored to include some important historical relics. According to a 1901 Boston Daily Globe article, the capsule houses the campaign buttons of former presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt.

Before its contents are finally revealed, however, The Bostonian Society is encouraging Twitter users to offer suggestions as to what modern-day items might make good additions to the capsule. Using the hashtag #LionAndUnicorn (the unicorn refers to a neighboring silver statue), locals have suggested everything from “fossilized cannoli" to "Boston Strong" gear to Dunkin Donuts coffee cups. After reading all of these responses, I immediately got to thinking, what might we include in a 2014 time capsule of our own? From the rise of feminist icons to the growing trend of big booty music videos, here are my suggestions for the top 10 items that represent what it's like to live in 2014:

1. Apple's iPhone 6/iPhone 6 Plus

Despite the controversy surrounding the new iPhone and its unfortunate tendency to bend, it's still perhaps the greatest piece of cellular technology we have to date, and certainly represents what it's like to live in tech-driven, 2014 society.

2. Crop Tops

2014 has managed to transform this famously hard-to-pull-off clothing item into something that's universally flattering.

3. Beyoncé and Jay Z's "On the Run" Concert Video

Whether they're the subject of divorce rumors or stealing the show at the VMAs, Beyoncé and Jay Z are arguably the most talked about couple of 2014. And even if you don't agree with the rest of America that they're a wonderful example of feminism in action, at the very least they've encouraged dialog and discussions about feminism.

4. The 50 Shades of Grey Trilogy

Although these books have been around for a few years, they're largely representative of the erotic novel (and pretty soon erotic film) phenomenon that's very much a part of 2014 culture.

5. A Gluten-Free Cookbook

If there's one thing 2014 seems to hate, it's gluten. Whether you're gluten intolerant, gluten sensitive, or simply on a gluten-free diet (beware of this growing fad), a gluten-free cookbook seems to accurately represent this popular dietary restriction.

6. The Official Emblem of the 2014 FIFA World Cup

Maybe it's only because I've recently discovered the joy of sports bars, but it seems to me that people were particularly enthusiastic about this year's World Cup (who knew soccer players could be so melodramatic?).

As recent as it may be, I have a feeling that this speech will go down in history as one of 2014's most memorable moments.

8. Google Glass

These computerized glasses are still too futuristic for my understanding, but they're undoubtedly 2014's coolest piece of technology. Plus, they're morphing into a fashion statement with the introduction of new, stylish frames.

9. "Big Booty" Music Videos

Vogue just deemed ours the "Era of the Big Booty." From Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" to Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea's "Booty" video, 2014 has been a time of celebration for those with a little extra junk in the trunk. And whether you think it's empowering or objectifying, it's still a prominent part of 2014 pop culture.

10. Video of Michael Sam Becoming the First Publicly Gay Football Player to be Drafted Into the NFL

Although he was sadly dropped from the Rams last month, the video of Sam receiving the call that he had been drafted into the NFL was a heartwarming example of how far we've come as a society. As the first openly gay player to be drafted, Sam has paved the way for other gay athletes to live out their dreams in 2014 and beyond.
