20 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Coffee

Sorry, but apparently I lied when I said that this infographic had everything you ever wanted to know about coffee on it. I just stumbled upon another infographic, you see, and it’s chock full of facts about coffee I’m willing to bet most of you have probably never heard. It’s National Coffee Day, so let’s embrace our love of this magical little brew by indulging in some fun trivia, shall we?

Created by Ryoko Iwata of ILoveCoffee.jp, AKA my spirit animal, it contains 20 little tidbits about my favorite drink that I definitely did not know before reading it. For example, did you know that coffee is technically a fruit? OK, so maybe it’s not a fruit in and of itself — but coffee beans actually aren’t beans at all. They’re the stones of the red and purple fruit produced by the plants of the genus Coffea. Mind. Blown.

I was also not aware of the fact that Hawaii is apparently the only state in the U.S. that grows coffee commercially; that the amount of caffeine in a 16-ounce grande-sized drink is equivalent to the amount in more than nine — nine! — cans of Coke; and that it takes exactly 40 coffee beans to make an espresso. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m endlessly fascinated by wacky trivia about my favorite things. Anyone else? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Head on over to ILoveCoffee.jp for a whole bunch of other amusing and informative coffee-themed infographics. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go prop my books up with my coffee bookends while eating a mocha scone and drinking my free coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts. Happy National Coffee Day!
