Chanel and VS Are In Serious Competition

by Sienna Fantozzi

Brown paper packages tied up with...white, satin Chanel ribbons. Karl Lagerfeld just announced that the Chanel Métiers d'art collection will be held in Salzburg. The collection, which was established in 2002, is a showcase to display the craftsmanship of the many ateliers involved with the fashion house, including costume jewelers, embroiderers, feather experts, and shoemakers. The location is always sought to highlight cities linked to Chanel's history, with previous locations including Dallas, Edinburgh, and Bombay. And Salzburg's import is a big one. Gabrielle Chanel was reportedly inspired to create the brand's famous little black jacket by a jacket she saw a lift attendant wearing near a Salzburg hotel. Basically, the early stages of street style sartorialism.

As excited as I am to see the collection parade through the Schloss Leopoldskron Rococo palace, I'm more excited to see who's sitting in the audience. Lagerfeld has cleverly chosen December 2nd as the date for his show, which is coincidentally the same night as the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in London. Since it's the first time the classic American lingerie show moves across the pond, could Lagerfeld be trying to keep the A-listers from attending? The designer is known for being controversial, so I'd bet it's more than a mere coincidence, but either way, let's make a prediction on which celebrities will be singing the sounds of Chanel, and which count angels among their favorite things.

1. Cara Delevingne — VS

The British model has been a favorite of Chanel's, from walking the runway to fronting ad campaigns, but seeing as how she's walked the VS show the last two years, I think she'll be staying put in her UK hometown. Sorry, Karl.

2. Miranda Kerr — Chanel

The former VS model has seen her fair share of angel wings, and after the 2012 controversy with Justin Bieber after the show, I think she'll play it safe and stick with Chanel.

3. Kim, Kanye, and North — Chanel

No contest. Chanel. Though Kanye has performed at a past VS show, he's a devotee to high fashion. And the VS runway is no place for a baby, obviously.

4. Justin Bieber — VS

Though the singer apparently has a collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld in the works, I can't imagine him missing out on a runway full of half-naked women.

5. Rihanna — VS

A frequent attendee for both shows, I think VS will get the singer for their front row. With her rumored new bond girl role, the VS runway will give her some serious inspiration.

6. Olivia Palermo — Chanel

She's been a presence at, I swear, every front row during September's fashion weeks. She'll stick with Chanel.

7. Alexa Chung — VS

A long-time friend of Cara Delevigne and her sister Poppy, she'll more than likely show her support in the VS audience.

8. Keira Knightley — Chanel

The face of Coco Mademoiselle has a new movie coming out that's generating Oscar buzz, so Chanel might be a good spot to scope out some dresses.
