Deep Fried Pumpkin Spice Latte Is a Thing Now

OK, yes, we’re all getting sick of the pumpkin spice craze now... but I can’t very well let this one go without commenting on it, so bear with me as we descend once more into the pie-spiced depths of fall’s most notorious flavor combination. Someone — specifically Amy Erickson of the food blog Oh, Bite It!deep fried a Pumpkin Spice Latte. For reals. And you guys? I have no idea what to think about it. My world may have just exploded. Or imploded. Or something.

To be fair, I’m frequently surprised by the number of things that taste delicious fried; until I actually consumed a fried Mars bar, for example, I was convinced it was going to be the grossest thing on the face of the planet. I was wrong. It was fantastic. I wouldn’t recommend eating an entire one by yourself in one sitting — I split mine with a friend — but essentially, it was oozy, melt-y chocolate and caramel inside a crispy, funnel cake-like exterior. Yum. I draw the line at fried butter on the grounds of instant heart attack… but maybe a fried PSL would be worth trying? What do you think? Yea or nay? Decisions, decisions!

Erickson’s recipe involves dunking hunks of pound cake into a Pumpkin Spice Latte and throwing them into a vat of oil; once they’re golden brown on all sides, you take ‘em out, drain ‘em on a piece of paper towel, and sprinkle ‘em with cinnamon sugar. It looks like this:

The whole thing sounds kind of like fried French toast, doesn’t it? Actually, come to think of it, PSL French toast might not be too bad of an idea: All you’d need to do would be to substitute challah for the pound cake, beat an egg and add enough of the latte to it to make it all milky (make sure the drink is cool first, or else it’ll cook the egg), and then either pan-fry the soaked bread slices or bake them in an oven-safe dish at, I don’t know, 350 degrees for 40 minutes or something. What do you think? I might have to try it this weekend. Nothing is better than Adventures in Sunday Morning Breakfast.

In any event, Erickson has a whooooooole lot of tasty-sounding treats up her sleeve — remember those macaroni and cheese burritos? Those were hers — so head on over to Oh, Bite It! For more deliciousness. Oh, and if Pumpkin Spice Latte French toast takes off? Just remember: You heard it here first.
