What Does She Mean She's a 7?

by Georgette Eva

Say what you want, haters, Selena Gomez is working on herself and she’s doing just fine. The "Come & Get It" singer was on The Ellen DeGeneres Show recently, and spoke to DeGeneres about how she was handling all of the recent changes in her life from owning her first house, living with her roommate/best friend from Texas, and working with a new manager and label. DeGeneres put it to Gomez to rate herself. She asked the star, "If you reassess yourself — which I think is good for everybody to do every year — just look at yourself and go, 'How am I doing? How am I growing?' One to 10, where are you?"

Gomez replied:

I’m a seven. I feel like I have been doing this for so long that people are like, "Be yourself, be yourself," and I'm still trying to figure out who that is. I know I'm not perfect, but I know that I have a lot of people that support me and love me. I don't want to let anyone down so I just try to be the best I can be. It's awkward being [in your] 20s.

DeGeneres was super supportive of Gomez's response, but what exactly does the Spring Breaker mean she's at "a seven"?

Let's see. Gomez has been through a pretty interesting year. In January, she voluntarily checked into rehab for undisclosed reasons. In April, everyone freaked out that she was going nuclear on friendships when Gomez started to unfollow the Jenner sisters, who she had hung out with at Coachella, her on-again-off-again boo Justin Bieber, and her front-row BFF Taylor Swift on Instagram. She then went on some sort of personal Eat, Pray, Love hiatus — I assume she did those things, though I don't know if she travelled to Italy and India — and announced her return via this Instagram post and the promise that she still loved pickles. She was the same Selena, back and ready.

She turned 22 on July 22 and celebrated with Cara Delevingne and friends in Saint-Tropez. And in September, she went to Paris Fashion Week with her perpetual love interest Bieber. Suffice it to say, other than her rocky relationship with Bieber, it looks like she's been on the up-and-up as her year has gone on.

As a Gomez fan, I'm pretty tired of hearing people write her off for as just a socialite now. In 2013 she had two films out, one of which was a return to the Disney Channel for her role as Alex Russo in a Wizards of Waverly Place TV-movie sequel, and she did a tour for her album Stars Dance, but in 2014, she's been in the news because of her relationship with Bieber and her fashion choices, rather than her films or songs.

I think Gomez is pretty smart in taking her time to choose where to commit as far as career direction right now, rather than just doing something inauthentic. Like she told DeGeneres, it is awkward being in your 20s.

"Being 20 is awkward at any time," DeGeneres agreed, "much less in front of the public eye and everybody photographing everything you do."

Gomez had a great response:

Yeah, but that's when I get to do amazing things like use my platform for things like UNICEF or kind of shift everything into what's important and what matters in the world. And that's my plus side.

So Gomez isn't sure where she's going but she's sticking to the positives. She might eventually move to New York with her best friend Swift. Maybe she'll do another album. Maybe she'll tell Bieber buh-bye. Either way, she's working toward being comfortable with herself, and considering she's already at a seven, she's doing pretty darn good.
