Hilarious Poetic Interpretation Of "Anaconda"

by Almie Rose

It's weird how you can get so hooked on a song that you might mindlessly sing along without ever truly digesting the words coming out of your mouth. But behind the sick beats and vocal stylings, some pop music lyrics are pretty ridiculous. Perfect example: Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda." Nicki's songs are so goddamn infectious that it's easy to just ignore the actual words, or at least to not care that much if they're somewhat problematic. I mean, if you really listen, this song is about a woman who sleeps with drug dealers because they buy her designer clothes. Enter "Pop Music Poetry", a YouTube channel devoted to slowing down and speaking the lyrics of popular songs over classical music (in this case, it's over Erik Satie's "Gymnopédie No.1" — trust me, you've heard it.) Why? Because he was disturbed that his 12-year-old niece was listening to the song, and he wanted to point out to her mom how adult the lyrics are.

The point to parents is valid enough. But for the rest of us, the effect is still hilarious. The video opens with the sound of crashing waves, and then, over a background of puffy white clouds, a deep voice speaks: "My anaconda. My anaconda don't. Want none. Unless you got buns, hon." This guy could totally do voiceover work, if he doesn't already, and he should. "I'm high as hell. I only took a half a pill. I'm on some dumb shit," he laments.

Watch for yourself:

You may never hear this song the same way. Or see the video the same way, either. How could you, with images like this burned into your brain:

If you feel so inclined, you can leave him a comment suggesting a pop song. "All About That Bass" seems like a popular choice.
