Meet Your New Favorite Artist

Eugenia Loli, a former nurse, computer programmer, tech journalist, and filmmaker (is that all? *feels lazy forever*), is now lording over the multimedia art realm. Her work borrows from classic images from decades gone by and surrealistically remixes them with the glitzy disco-balls, cats, and galaxies you might already obsess about on Tumblr. It's essentially some of the most epic art work you'll find on the Internet. And there is a lot of epic art work on the Internet, so that's saying something. Here’s Loli’s official artist’s statement:

Eugenia Loli originated in the technology sector, but she left that impersonal world behind in order to build new, exciting worlds via her art. Her collages, with the help of the title, often include a teasing, visual narrative, as if they’re a still frame of a surreal movie. The viewers are invited to make up the movie’s plot in their mind."

To put it simply, Andy Warhol has got nothing on Eugenia Loli. She takes bold, sultry, bizarre images and she juxtaposes them together to create a brazen, hybrid kind art that is both hyper-fun and hyper-emotional. Women who embrace men with disco-ball heads, a black and white moon that is actually a bowl with spaghetti in it, and a cherubic little girl blowing bubbles that are actually planets are only some of the many fantastic, Dadaist images Loli has created.

On her Tumblr, Loli breaks down her artistic process, explaining:

“I start by finding a ‘base’ image, and then I sort of build around it. Sometimes I have a concrete idea of what I want to do, and sometimes I leave the images to fit together by themselves.”

All of her art communicates a message, one that is probably unique to every person looking at it. Because that’s how Loli rolls. Here are some of my favorites:

"Rising Mountain"

"Unrequited Fantasies"
