Oscar de la Renta was a legend in every sense of the word. When I heard the news that de la Renta passed away Monday evening, my mind immediately went to Erika Bearman, otherwise known as @oscarprgirl. Her Instagram, Tumblr, and Twitter accounts, boasting thousands upon thousands of followers, were a window into the ODLR empire and her lavish lifestyle within it. Images of galas, trips to the Hamptons, frequent try-on sessions, and even her earth shattering hair color change up, filled the feed to all our glee. But, the most poignant posts were of the man himself depicted as the great talent, mentor, and friend he, no doubt, was to Bearman.
As Senior Vice President of Global Communications of Oscar de la Renta LLC, Bearman, along with Donna Karan International’s DKNY PR GIRL (@dknygirl), is credited with the rise of the PR girl behind the scenes and living the glam life social media trend of the last few years. She mans the helm of multiple social platforms and, with each witty but always on message post, her love for the brand and the man come through. She once said of de la Renta in an interview with Holt Renfrew,
When you go to the Dominican Republic, which is where Oscar’s from, they call him Don Oscar, which Don means king and there is no better way for me to describe what it’s like working for him … No matter what he’s doing, he’s enjoying it and living in that moment and that is a lesson I’ll keep with me always.
