One Direction's 'This Is Us' Is a Huge Success: See How It Stacks Up Against Other Concert Movies
One Direction's first concert/tell-all movie opened this past Labor Day weekend with stunning results, briefly knocking The Butler out of the #1 spot before closing out the weekend at #2 with a whopping gross of $18 million. But how does This is Us compare to other pop stars' concert movies? Let's take a look.
Katy Perry: 'Part of Me'
In 2012 the Candy Queen premiered her concert movie centered on her California Dreams Tour. The opening weekend proved to be less lucrative than her astronomical tour/album sales, only raking in $7 million.
Justin Bieber: 'Never Say Never'
In 2011 Bieber's behind-the-scenes, rags-to-riches story about achieving your dreams generated $29.5 million on its opening weekend, making it the highest grossing film by a musician on this list.
Michael Jackson: 'This Is It'
The King of Pop's final performance premiered as a motion picture in 2009 and raked in $23 million on its opening weekend.
Jonas Brothers: '3D Concert Experience'
Also in 2009, the trio of brothers released a 3D concert movie riding the wave of success of their albums and Disney Channel movie Camp Rock. The film grossed $12.5 million on its opening weekend, but didn't fare well in the long run.
'On The Line'
N*SYNC's Lance Bass and Joey Fatone starred in this "missed-connection" film with a pre-'Entourage' Emmanuelle Chriqui that may or may not have inspired the Craigslist forum. On its abysmal opening weekend in 2001 it only generated $2.3 million.
'Spice World'
Finally, the concert movie to rule them all. In 1998 the Spice Girls premiered their concert movie entitled Spice World, which I rented approximately 300 times on my family's Direct TV. Even though it still pops up on our television schedules from time to time, on its opening weekend it raked in only a small $10.5 million.
