We Totally Support This Woman For Living in KFC

by Kat George

Is it wrong that the Chinese woman who stayed at a KFC for a week after having her heart broken is my hero? Don't get me wrong: It's very sad that Tan Shen's relationship ended and that she was so depressed about it. But as someone who has experienced real heartbreak before, I feel like Shen, 26, did what all of us have definitely thought about but never actually had the balls to do post-breakup, and that is to hang out at a fast-food joint for a week. Shen says she initially stopped at the KFC for comfort food, but wound up staying because she "needed time to think." She says, "I didn’t want to go back to my apartment because it was full of memories of him. So I stayed." We all know that feeling for sure.

After a few days had passed and Shen hadn't left (the KFC was open 24 hours), the employees started to take notice. Employee Jiang Li Lung said, "At first, no one really noticed her. But after a few days, I began thinking she looked really familiar. Then I realized we had been serving her for the past three days and that she hadn’t actually left. When we asked her if she was okay, she said she was and just needed time to think. And then asked for another box of chicken wings with extra large fries." Being empathetic to her depression (and because she was a paying customer), the employees let Shen stay.

Shen had been phoning sick into work for a week when she finally decided to call her KFC slumber residence quits, and go stay with her parents instead. She also said, "I was getting sick of the taste of chicken, so there was no point in staying there anymore." You know what they say: When a person is tired of the taste of fried chicken, they're tired of life.
